“United makes you feel welcome no matter how long you have been associated with the club or had a period of absence. The club is supportive of providing all players an opportunity to further develop themselves even if they come from other clubs originally. My fondest memory is playing in 3rd grade with an amazing team, coach and my mother. Having the support of the club after my mother passed and naming an award in her honour, not only for what she did with the club but also within Hockey ACT. When I had children I wanted them to be involved with hockey and I couldn’t go past United for them due to my loyalty and it has been fantastic to see them be a part of 3 generations at United.”
I joined United Hockey Club because my older brother played and I wanted to give it a go. The best thing about United for me is the friends that I have made and the competitive experiences that playing hockey allowed me. My fondest United memories are the 1999 golden goal in the GF, any of the four premierships I won, the Mug Gate game, playing 300 games is something I’m pretty proud of, watching thr 2023 GF was pretty awesome, Raiders lime milk after Minkey out at Kippax. The amazing calibre of coaches and people involved in junior development makes a huge difference to skill development and retention of talented players.
“I was recruited in 2015 from University of Canberra by Peta MacKinnon. United is a great club with lifelong active members which prove how community and family focused the club is. It is such a great role modelling for our young Roosters. Cam Smith has engrained a passion for our club in my little roosters with his inspiring team talks.”
“I joined United in 1984 because of the strong minkey program and my family’s belief that the club was headed in the right direction. My fondest memories of United is Club Days where everybody would get together and support the teams”. United’s strength is in operating as a single club, not separate CL/SL/junior sub groups just with the same name.”
“I joined the Presbyterian Hockey Club through St Columbus Church, Braddon in 1960 because friends at Ainsley Primary were going to play hockey. United has run well for the last 70 years due to interest and involvement by players and families input back to the club. We need to ensure that this still happens for the future to keep the club in good stead for our up and coming. We have to have goals and platforms for players to aspire to.”
“I joined United Hockey Club because my brothers both played for United. By the time I was 3 they couldn’t keep me off the field so my parents figured that getting me into Minkeys would teach me to use a hockey stick safely. I haven’t ever thought of playing for any other club because guys like Crash, Luke, Gilly and Davo weere guys I loved watching and was lucky to get to play with. United is the club I hope to play for, for many years to come. My favourite memory has to be the 2023 premiership.”
“I started with United in 2004 whilst still living in Moruya and travelling up to Canberra to play. Fun fact, the first trial games and first few rounds I played hockey in board shorts as I didn’t have any white playing shorts. What I love about United is the sense of community and belonging. The club is very welcoming to players across all levels and develops a sense of community through teams and the whole club.”
“I was born into the royal blue and white. I’m surprised I wasn’t stamped with the St Andrews cross on my forehead. The club for me is a representation of home. It’s my childhood, it’s my adolescence and it’s my young adult life. The people of that club shaped me as a person. One of my favourite memories is the the days at our old Deasland house after a final or a big game. We’d have a day of full roast lamb on the spit and a keg and everyone would make their way there for an hour or 12. Sitting outside next to the fire with all those people, enjoying each others company away from the hockey field where we put so much time and energy towards.”
